ART

Work wise this month we have taken a dichotomous approach to the gallery space with a predominantly two person show of work by Geoffrey Notman and Leslie Falls (http://www.lesliefalls.com/)
Notman has been working in what could be described as a hyper- realistic style for the past ten years. He has been painting very much about the ‘everyman’ with an acute scrutiny of human foibles, but at the same time an overriding empathy for his subject that takes it into a much more compelling and readable territory. These aren’t ‘box office blockbusters’, but more the hand of an auteur at an indie festival.

No Bloody Privacy

Notman is now on the move from the outrageously detailed work of the last few years. He has stepped back and let information pass through a filter- flat colour planes appear. Even the underpainting or ‘ground’ shows up from time to time, enabling the formal elements of his process to align more with the subject. It’s not a perfect world, we are all flawed, but within this paradigm lies a form of utopia accessible to all and sundry.

Chicago born artist Leslie Falls work explores the affective gratification experienced throughout creative activity- in her case, hard labour! In this series of works, Falls’ substrates are old woollen blankets. She then stitches and pins the surfaces in a monumental and fastidious endeavour in which she explores values of  task and accomplishment, productivity and pleasure and ultimately she establishes through a routine of ordinary activities the value of process over product.

Streicker's Letter

Each stitch or puncture represents a momentary productive expenditure of time- and there are thousands of them. The results are remarkable and touchingly personal at times. ‘Love, Mimi’ is a beautiful transcript or more accurately a facsimile of a letter [embroidered by hand] to the artist from her grandmother with exquisitely stitched on vintage beads and sequins. The letter works tread that fine line between public and private activities. In this case they present as an extreme act of generosity from the artist. After reading them, you come away with an uplifting feeling of warmth, wellbeing and a funny sense of gratitude…what more could you ask for from a piece of art.

Royal Bake, pie charts and others.....

We have some exciting new work in the gallery… Eion Stevens, Martin Poppelwell, Basia Smolnicki and Andy Irving have all contributed to our ‘Royal Bake’ show and the work looks great.
Stevens says he hasn’t shown in Wellington for  ‘a good 15 years.. ’ and has sent up from Lyttleton 6 iconic ’ oil on panel works that span a 12 year period. His flat planes of colour and signature semi-abstract motifs are as consistent as ever. He says his work is largely autobiographical…’heading towards self portraiture’. One thing that remains the same is his deftness at handling form and colour that can only come from years of steadfastly plying his trade.

Music

Martin Poppelwell has sent down 2 ceramic pieces and a fabulous pie chart painting- as always a delightfully bemused stream of consciousness corralled into his signature wonky grids!
Pie Chart Study

Andy Irving has replaced ‘strip light’ with the stunning illuminated ‘Concentric Circles’ …do a drive by this is always on and looks great at night.

Concentric Circles

Basia Smolnicki has made aquatint portraits from rubbish! These are hilarious outcomes from the humblest beginnings!

The first week....

Sweet sweet muck, Sticky crud and the big toothpaste arrived from Dunedin ceramic artists Madeleine Child and Philip Jarvis respectively. It’s been a challenge to keep peoples mitts off Madeleine’s incredibly tempting creations and it’s worth a visit alone to see Philips loo set!
The other worldly ‘Stadium‘  is here from Auckland thanks to Denys Watkins- a master class in balance and colour control. The stunning ‘Moana Pool’ by Kate Small also here- it’s a beautiful example of her typically contemplative studies of the human condition- always with a little bit of tongue in the corner of the cheek.
Megan Campbell and Andy Irving continue to delight their Wellington fans – Megan with her quirky takes on what it is to be alive and well in the new millennium! and Andy is affecting traffic flow along Para St. at night with his ‘Striplight’, and his lovely little ‘Copper House’ is off to a good home.

Roger Booth has turned a few heads with his fresh take on the art of mosaic tiling with ‘Intersection’ and has another gem, the two part ‘Ice storm’ about to arrive. Scott Kennedy has pulled out the wonderfully titled ‘New York apartment style living’, which will delight his many long-time followers. Helena Hughes has sent down four stunning double exposure works in collaboration with Warren Elwin, who shot over the top in New York.
Angus walker has produced a little B/W stunner with ‘This is the place’ and Andrew Missen has people lining up for more ‘scribble’ action with his delightful wall mounted construction.
So all up it has been a great first week for Cecil Veda Gallery- people really seem to love the concept.
The flowers look and smell divine, come and get ‘em!! See you soon.
